VOIP and internet telephones
By the end of 2025, Openreach, the telephone network operators, are switching off the analogue public switched telephone network (PSTN) and transitioning to a fully digital network.
What this means is those who have a current telephone and line that is analogue, will be forced, whether you like it or not, to adopt digital voice over internet phones (VOIP).
Who will need to make the VOIP switch?
It’s a short answer; everyone, residential and business. It’s out of the public’s control but Openreach are confident that they will meet the deadline and that all analogue services will be switched off at the end of December 2025.
It’s important to understand that this won’t just affect the voice aspect of analogue systems but will have an impact on things such as alarm systems, EPOS, door entry systems, alert systems and faxes.
Who benefits?
Whilst calls are undoubtedly clearer and there are the benefits of flexibility for business, the average home user doesn’t gain much functionality. The big message is that it will be cheaper and better but it remains to be seen for who.
